wind energy investments

Alpha Genesis’ principals and investors have a long involvement in the energy sector. We have entered the wind energy industry because of its significant potential in the worldwide production of energy. A mistrust exists among energy investors that does not reflect the realities of wind energy performance. In the pursue to advance wind energy’s credibility we employ strict investment guidelines on the risk/profitability of the projects that we develop or participate. These guidelines include:

Site selection: An important characteristic of wind energy is its production function: The energy of the wind is proportional to the cube of its speed: P/A=½ r V³ (i.e. a wind speed of 12mph results to around 29% more power than a wind speed of 11 mph; the % impact on net income is even higher). Other climatic factors are also crucial: seasonality (i.e. extreme winds), temperatures.

Reliability of equipment: Our interest in employing the latest technologies has a secondary position to the reliability of the equipment chosen for a wind plant. Considerations include: manufacturer’s maintenance record, relevance of the equipment given the site characteristics (i.e. performance under extreme temperatures).

Federal and state incentives: A decisive factor on the establishment of a wind plant in the United States is often the 1.5cents/kWh of Production Tax Credit (PTC). Other state incentives can further increase profitability. The ongoing changes of these incentives and their adoption by an increasing number of states necessitates continuing vigilance to ensure improved returns both for Alpha Genesis and its investors.

Choosing the appropriate debt to equity ratio is an issue that must be viewed on a project by project basis. Various risk factors need to be alleviated before further leveraging on existing investments: length and clauses of Power Purchase Agreement, actual performance of the wind plant.
