The long-term success of the aquaculture sector is tied
to an understanding of its environmental implications.
Aquaculture can provide adequate food for earth’s
increasing population. Still, both multilateral
development agencies and other institutional investors
are skeptical of utilizing this potential of
aquaculture. The main obstacle is the environmental
degradation that often accompanies industrial scale
projects.
In
the course of the last three decades, both the public
and the private sector have been actively involved to refine practices and
technologies that ensure adequate environmental
protection. These efforts have been successful. What
remains to be achieved is the proper implementation of
these technologies.
As the
world is becoming more integrated, there is a momentum
to exert pressure both on governments and private
companies for upgrading their facilities to these higher
environmental standards. Beyond this pressure derived
from ‘consumer awareness’ or from such entities as
the World Trade Organization, Alpha Genesis pursues to
involve the investor community in what we assert to be a
highly prospective growth industry.
