Professor Avnimelech retired in June 2002 as the
Dean of Faculty of Agricultural Engineering, Technion,
Israel Institute of Technology. Yoram Avnimelech holds a
M.Sc. and a Ph.D. from Hebrew University, Jerusalem.
Professor Avnimelech has been actively involved
with aquaculture since his management of the Sea of
Galilee Watershed Research Unit (1973-78) where he
helped restructure aquaculture activities to prevent the
pollution of the lake. He is acknowledged as one of the
leading scientists for the establishment of aquaculture
in Israel. Professor Avnimelech has 40 publications on
fishponds and aquaculture.
His work experience includes a senior management
position for one year at the world’s biggest shrimp
business company, Thailand CP Aquaculture. His duties
included the establishment of a research center and
training of personnel. Other shrimp farms that Yoram
Avnimelech worked (i.e. designing and implementation of
shrimp farms) were in the Philippines, Ivory Coast,
Australia, USA, and South America. His current work in
South America involves an operation of 1,000 hectares in
ponds, where he helped to raise the yields by 180%.

Quality Management Lab; Researcher on environmental
biotechnology, Lab of Microbial Ecology, R.U.G., Gent,
Belgium; Chairman of the council of national parks and
